Day trading psychology: three blocks with a gate between each

Fatigue does not feel like fatigue. It feels like marginal setups looking a little more acceptable than they did at the open.

Is this you?

  • —Your worst hour is late in the session.
  • —You keep clicking after your plan is done for the day.
  • —Your standards loosen without a decision.
  • —You decide whether you are too tired while already tired.

Two or more of those and this is the state costing you the most, not the strategy.

What it actually costs

Late-session trades are taken with a loosened filter at the same size as your best ones, which is why a good morning routinely gives everything back after lunch.

The protocol: The Session Frame

Trigger — Fifteen minutes before your first tradeable window.

  1. 1.Write three numbers at the top of your notes: maximum trades, maximum loss in dollars, and the clock time you stop regardless of P&L.
  2. 2.Write the two setups you will take today by name. Anything not on that list is not a trade.
  3. 3.Set a timer for a 60-second state check at the top of every hour: breath, shoulders, and one word for how you feel.

How long — Five minutes up front, sixty seconds an hour, two minutes to log.

Do this in your next session

Split the session into open, middle and close, each with its own trade budget. Two minutes standing between blocks, one word for your state, and three written stop conditions decided before the bell.

Not sure this is your state?

The quiz takes two minutes, needs no sign-up, and names your top three protocols out of the fourteen.
