The Mental Edge
Discipline / rule-breaking

Trading discipline without willpower: put the rule on the desk

Discipline is not a trait you have more or less of. It is how much of your rule set exists outside your head, where arousal cannot argue with it.

Is this you?

  • —You know your rules and still break them.
  • —The rules change slightly depending on the day.
  • —You can explain every break afterwards.
  • —You have no daily record of held versus broken.

Two or more of those and this is the state costing you the most, not the strategy.

What it actually costs

A rule held mentally competes with everything else your mind is doing in a live session, and it loses every time arousal rises — which is precisely when it mattered.

The protocol: The Rule Card

Trigger — Every session, before your first order.

  1. 1.Write exactly five rules on one index card. Five, not fifteen — more than five will not survive a bad open.
  2. 2.Each rule must be checkable by a stranger: "max three trades" not "do not overtrade".
  3. 3.Tape the card to the bottom edge of your monitor, where your eyes land when you look away from price.

How long — Two minutes to write, five seconds per entry, one minute at the close.

Do this in your next session

One index card in front of the monitor: allowed setup, maximum size, loss that ends the day. Touch it before every entry. Score all three at the close and keep the cards in a stack.

Not sure this is your state?

The quiz takes two minutes, needs no sign-up, and names your top three protocols out of the fourteen.
