Trading tilt: how to spot it early and reset in ninety seconds
Tilt is an arousal state with physical tells. Caught at the first two tells, ninety seconds fixes it. Caught at the third losing trade, the day fixes nothing.
Is this you?
- —Your timeframe drops without you deciding to change it.
- —Breathing has moved into the top of your chest.
- —You are reading the tape instead of the level.
- —Your hand is on the platform before a setup exists.
Two or more of those and this is the state costing you the most, not the strategy.
What it actually costs
Tilt does not make you take bad trades so much as it removes the filter that stops them. The setups still look like setups; the difference is that the ones you would have passed on now get through, at size chosen by urgency.
The protocol: Tilt Ladder Check
Trigger — Any loss larger than your average, or two losses in a row.
- 1.Rate your arousal 1 to 5 out loud. 1 is flat calm, 5 is hands shaking.
- 2.At 1 or 2: continue trading, note the rating in your journal.
- 3.At 3: halve your size for the next two trades and say the number aloud before each entry.
How long — 15 seconds to rate, 15 minutes to reset if needed.

Write your own two tells on a card before the open. When both show up, stand, walk out of sight of the screen, and run the reset by a timer. Score it at the close: did you name your next valid setup calmly before re-entering?
Not sure this is your state?
The quiz takes two minutes, needs no sign-up, and names your top three protocols out of the fourteen.
