Trading tilt: how to recognise it and reset
Tilt is not a mood. It is a measurable shift: faster breath, tighter shoulders, a shorter time horizon and a rising tolerance for setups you would normally skip. Once you can name where you are on the ladder, the reset is simple.
The protocol: Tilt Ladder Check
Trigger — Any loss larger than your average, or two losses in a row.
- 1.Rate your arousal 1 to 5 out loud. 1 is flat calm, 5 is hands shaking.
- 2.At 1 or 2: continue trading, note the rating in your journal.
- 3.At 3: halve your size for the next two trades and say the number aloud before each entry.
- 4.At 4 or 5: stand up, walk out of the room, and set a fifteen-minute timer before you look at a chart again.
- 5.On return, re-rate. If you are still at 4, the session is over.
- How long —
- 15 seconds to rate, 15 minutes to reset if needed.
- You know it worked when —
- Your next entry matches a written setup and your size matches the rating you gave yourself.
- If it doesn't work —
- If you cannot say the number out loud honestly, treat yourself as a 4 and leave the chair.
Tilt is not only anger
Quiet tilt is more expensive than loud tilt. Numbness, a flat stare, clicking through setups without reading them — that is the same elevated state with the volume down. The ladder catches it because it asks about your body, not your feelings.
Rate before you rationalise
The rating has to come before you look at the chart again. Once you are reading price, you will build a case for why you are fine. Numbers spoken out loud are harder to argue with than thoughts.
The cost of trading at a 4
Traders who track this consistently find that most of their worst days come from a handful of trades placed at a 4 or 5. You are not trying to eliminate tilt — you are trying to stop sizing into it.

How do I know if I am tilted or just focused?
Focus feels wide: you can still see the whole chart and you are happy to skip. Tilt feels narrow: one instrument, one idea, a need for it to happen now.
Can I trade through tilt with smaller size?
At a 3, yes, with half size and a spoken check before each entry. At a 4 or higher, size reduction does not fix the decision quality — leave the chair.
