How to stop revenge trading
Revenge trading happens in a narrow window: the seconds after a loss when your body is still holding the charge and your platform is still one click away. You do not fix it with resolve. You fix it by putting a mechanical gap between the loss and the next order.
The protocol: 90-Second Tilt Circuit Breaker
Trigger — The moment you notice the thought "I can get that back right now."
- 1.Hands off the mouse and keyboard. Physically move them away from you.
- 2.Start a 90-second timer out loud.
- 3.Say, in a full voice: "The last trade is closed. This urge is not a setup."
- 4.Six slow breaths — four seconds in, six seconds out.
- 5.Write three factual sentences about the trade you just closed: what you saw, what you did, which rule you broke.
- 6.Disable new orders for the next ten minutes (flat the platform, close the ticket, or lock the DOM).
- How long —
- 90 seconds, plus a 10-minute order lockout.
- You know it worked when —
- You reach the end of the timer and the next order you place matches a written setup, not the loss.
- If it doesn't work —
- If you place an order anyway, cut size to a quarter and end the session after that trade. No exceptions, no negotiation with yourself mid-session.
Why willpower fails here
Revenge trading is driven by arousal, not analysis. Your heart rate is elevated, your time horizon has collapsed to minutes, and your brain is treating a closed loss as an open threat. Telling yourself to be disciplined asks the part of you that is offline to do the work. A timer, a spoken sentence and a physical distance from the keyboard work because they do not require judgment.
The signature to watch for
Revenge shows up as speed. Faster clicks, bigger size, a setup you would not have taken an hour ago, and a running internal monologue about fairness. If you catch the speed, you catch the state — size and rationalisation come after.
Installing the trigger
The protocol only works if something reminds you to run it. Put a sticky note on the bottom of your monitor that reads "Hands off. 90 seconds." and read it out loud after every red trade for two weeks — winners included, so the habit is not tied to pain.

Questions traders ask
Is revenge trading the same as tilt?
Revenge trading is one behaviour that comes out of tilt. Tilt is the state: elevated arousal after a loss, shortened time horizon, a need to make the market answer. Revenge trading is what the state does with your order ticket.
How long should I stay out after a revenge trade?
Ten minutes is enough to break the arousal loop for most traders. If you have already taken one revenge trade, end the session — the state usually returns within the hour.
What if I trade in a fast market where 90 seconds costs me setups?
You will miss some setups. You will also stop losing the days where three revenge trades erase a week. Ninety seconds is the smallest gap that reliably changes the next decision.
