The Mental Edge

Position sizing is a psychology tool, not just a risk tool

If you cannot hold a position without checking your phone, the problem you are trying to fix with mindset work is a sizing problem.

The symptom is downstream of the size

Cutting winners at twenty minutes, hovering the cursor on the exit, checking the chart at 3am — these read as discipline failures, and they respond far faster to a size reduction than to any amount of resolve. Emotional capacity is real and it is finite. Trade above it and every protocol you install will be fighting your own nervous system.

Find your capacity size

Halve your normal size. Take three trades and let each one reach its stop or its target without touching it. If you managed that without reaching for the phone, you are at or below capacity; if you did not, halve again. That number is your working size for the next two weeks, regardless of what your risk calculator says you can afford.

Earn the way back up

Size rises on execution quality, never on P&L. Three consecutive sessions with no moved stops, no early exits and no unplanned entries buys you one step up. A single break resets the count. That single rule removes most of the oversizing that follows a green run, because it makes the trigger for sizing up something you control rather than something the market handed you.

Takeaway — The right size is the one where you can watch a full setup play out without needing to do anything.
