Trading anxiety before the open: a four-minute downshift
Anxiety before the open is your body preparing for an event it cannot predict. Give it something decided and something physical to do.
Why it peaks in the last ten minutes
In the run-up to the open, there is nothing left to analyse and everything left to face. Arousal climbs with no outlet, so it looks for one — which is how traders end up taking a position before their setup exists just to make the waiting stop. The entry is not a trade; it is relief.
The four-minute downshift
Trigger: ten minutes to the open, or any moment your chest tightens while flat. Steps: stand, shoulders down, breathe four in and six out for two minutes; then spend two minutes writing three lines — your maximum loss for the day, the one setup you will take, and the hour you stop. Success test: your breathing is in your belly and you can read all three lines back without changing them.
If the anxiety stays
Stay flat for the first fifteen minutes of the session and watch. Sitting through the open once without a position teaches your body that the bell is not an emergency. If it is still there after three sessions of this, the size is too large for your current capacity — halve it and re-run.
Takeaway — Decide the loss, the setup and the stop time before the bell, and the anxiety has nothing left to solve.
